2 "Cliffords Daughter" Written
by Lee McCormick
It
was a warm day in Texas, the sun was beating down from the light blue
sky.
The
Ewing family gathered at a small cemetery just outside of Braddock County.
There was a stillness in the air and a quietness that was quite moving.
Today was the funeral of Jenna Wade Krebbs, 46 years old, loving mother
to Lucas and Charlotte, the wife of Ray and ex love of Bobbys. She grew
up on the ranch next to the Ewings, her father Lucas Wade owned that
ranch and today she would be laid to rest beside her father.
Ray stood
tall , his face emotionless as he looked on, clinging to the hand of
his son, his motherless son. He had no words but many thoughts were
rushing through his head, and with every thought there was a pain that
stabbed his heart a million times over. "why?" . He blamed
himself, was he a bad husband? What had gone so wrong in their lives
that Jenna would take her own life.
Bobby Ewing
also stood in silence next to his ex wife Pamela. What complicated lives
they all had seen, he had loved Jenna with all his heart once and he
stood remembering that young cowgirl who rode over to his daddy's ranch
, full of life, full of spirit. But in his mind the images of Jenna laying
dead with a single bullet wound to the head kept flashing in.
Pamela
had her own thoughts, maybe some guilt, the woman Bobby left Jenna for,
Pamela remembered the night Bobby asked her to marry her again, how
happy she was how hurt she knew Jenna would be. She stood not understanding
why Jenna was dead.
And then
there was JR, he stood, he looked awkward, he wanted it to be over.
Death was not something anyone liked but to JR it was the one thing
he had no control over, and for that he would rather not be reminded
of his own mortality. He felt no guilt for pushing Jenna perhaps a little
too far, in his logic she was responsible for her own decisions , she
pulled the trigger, she made the choice.
Standing
next to Miss Ellie was Donna Dowling, ex wife of Ray, she hurt too,
she hurt for Ray, she cared for him deeply and always would. She watched
him as he held his head down, she knew him so well, she was scared for
him.
The coffin
was lowered down into the ground. Ray watched on, he held back the tears.
His rough tanned hand clung around tightly to that of his sons pale
smooth hand. With every inch the coffin moved down, Ray tightened his
grip, he took a breath as he fought his emotions.
Miss Ellie
looked down and covered her mouth with an unsteady hand as she began
to shake crying, Bobby looked over at his mother. Donna turned to Ellie
and hugged her, Ellie tightly clung to her as she her cries disturbed
the silence.
The coffin
reached its destination with an undignified arrival. A cloud lightly
moved over the sun, casting a shadow over the coffin. Ray knelt down
to Lucas and handed him a rose. He looked into his son's eyes, they
did not speak but looked deep into each others eyes as a tear rolled
down Rays cheek. He stood up and took his son over to the open grave,
he held his sons hand. Together they held the rose and dropped it down
where it fell lightly upon Jennas last resting place.Ray stood for a
moment in silence, then walked away with his son. He didn't look at
any other Ewing but kept on walking right past them. Bobby looked concerned
and went to follow him, Donna put out her hand and touched Bobbys shoulder.
She shook her head "Let him be Bobby........" Bobby
thought for a moment then nodded and awkwardly smiled. Donna turned
and watched as Ray and Lucas walked out into the distance, they seemed
so alone, perhaps they were now. She turned back and looked down at
the coffin. The plaque engraved in gold read simply "Jenna
Wade Krebbs 1954-2000 Sleep Peacefully".
