It was the phenomenal success of the "Who shot J.R.?" season ending cliffhanger on Dallas, which closed the show's third season, that led the cliffhanger to become a popular staple on television dramas. Alongside 'Who shot JR?" (Larry Hagman) , other notable Dallas cliffhangers included the death of Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) in season 8 of the series and his return at the end of season 9 when his wife Pamela Ewing (Victoria Principal) woke from a year long dream to find Bobby alive and well.
