Smallville does Dallas

Casting is underway for the TNT pilot episode of Dallas and the hunt is for the key cast.

The roles of feuding cousins, John Ross and Christopher Ewing,  are pivotal to the shows success and there are some names at the top of the casting list.

Time Warner who own TNT are keen to nurture some of their current talent.  Popular Smallville actor Justin Hartley is top of the list to take a role in the series.  With Smallville ending after its 10th season in May 2011, Justin has been penciled in for the role of Christopher Ewing or the troublesome brother of one of the Ewing cousins girlfriends.

It doesn’t end there.  Annette O’Toole who played Martha Kent has been banded around for the role of Bobby Ewing’s new wife Ann.

Annette is slightly older than originally scripted for the character but is believed to be perfect for the Miss Ellieesque role and to keep those Ewing boys in line.

Who would you want to see in the roles?

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

I believe that you simply can do with a few percent to power the message house a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A fantastic read. I’ll definitely be back.

    TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I GREW UP WATCHING “DALLAS” AS MY FAVORITE SHOW. BOBBY EWING WAS MY ROLE MODEL. BOBBY AND PAM WERE MY TV FAVORITE IDEAL ROLE MODEL COUPLE. I WAS SADDENED EVERYTIME THE TWO WERE APART RANGING FROM THE FIRST DIVORCE TO PAM’S NIGHTMARE DEATH OF BOBBY TO PAM VANISHING.

LATER ON I EVEN LIKED THE BOBBY-APRIL COUPLE EVEN BETTER. THIS TIME I WAS HAPPIER THAT BOBBY GOT SOMEONE WHO WAS MORE SUPPORTIVE OF HIM WHO HAD A SENSE OF HUMOR. IT WAS THE SADDEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN ON TELEVISION WHEN APRIL WAS GUNNED DOWN LEAVING MY ROLE MODEL BOBBY DEVASTATED. IN FACT, I STILL COULD NOT GET OVER APRIL’S DEATH. SINCE THE CHARACTER OF PAM WASN’T OFFICIALLY KILLED OFF IN ORDER TO LEAVE VICTORIA AN OPTION OF EVER RETURNING TO THE SHOW WHY DID THEY HAVE TO INSTANTLY KILL APRIL OFF? IT WAS UNFAIR TO SHEREE THAT SHE DIDN’T HAVE THE OPTION OF RETURNING TO THE SHOW ONE YEAR AFTER MATERNITY.

IF IT WAS ALREADY PLANNED FROM THE BEGINNING OF THAT SEASON TO BE THE FINAL SEASON OF “DALLAS” THEN INSTEAD OF KILLING APRIL OFF THEY COULD HAVE JUST HAD APRIL KIDNAPPED AND MISSING ALL SEASON LONG WHILE BOBBY AFTER RETURNING HOME ALONE FROM HIS HONEYMOON SENDS MEN TO SEARCH FOR APRIL. THEN AT THE END OF THAT FINAL SEASON BOBBY GETS WORD THAT APRIL HAS BEEN RESCUED. IF THEY WANTED TO SHOW HOW SHEREE IS A VERY GOOD IN PLAYING SUCH DEATH SCENES SINCE IT WON HER BEST DEATH SCENE BY THE SOAP OPERA DIGEST AWARD IT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT APRIL’S DEATH AND FUNERAL WAS BOBBY’S DREAM IN WHICH BOBBY WOKE UP ALONE IN PARIS FOLLOWING APRIL’S FUNERAL WHILE APRIL IS STILL MISSING AND KIDNAPPED. THEN BOBBY RETURNS HOME ALONE WHILE SENDING MEN TO SEARCH FOR HER UNTIL SHE IS RESCUED AT SEASON’S END.

I’VE GOT A GREAT IDEA. WHY DON’T THE NEW TNT PILOT EPISODE OF “DALLAS” BEGIN WHEN BOBBY WAKES UP FROM HIS DREAM WITH APRIL RIGHT NEXT TO HIM TAKING THEM BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THEIR HONYMOON IN PARIS. BOBBY’S DREAM WOULD BEGIN FROM THE TIME OF APRIL’S KIDNAPPING, TO THE END OF THE FINAL SEASON OF “DALLAS”, AND UP UNTIL THE END OF THE SPECIAL FILMS “J.R. RETURNS” AND “WAR OF THE EWINGS.” THEN RIGHT AFTER THE SCENE WHEN BOBBY WAKES UP FROM HIS DREAM WITH APRIL RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. THEN THE STORY WOULD BE FORWARDED 20 YEARS LATER. THEN 20 YEARS LATER A NEW STORY IS WRITTEN AT SOUTHFORK WITH BOBBY, APRIL, CHRISTOPHER, J.R., JOHN ROSS, CALLY, JAMES, BARNES, SUE ELLEN, OR EVEN MICHELLE STEVENS.

PLEASE TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK INTO THIS AND CONTACT WRITERS AND PRODUCERS. PLEASE REPLY.

IT SHOULD BEGIN BY REPLAYING APRIL’S GUN DOWN AND FUNERAL THEN BOBBY WAKES UP FROM HIS DREAM WHILE STILL ON THE HONEYMOON IN PARIS AND APRIL IS TAKING A SHOWER. THEN AS BOBBY APPROACHES THE SHOWER (WITH BOBBY AND APRIL’S FAMOUS SAXOPHONE SONG BEING PLAYED IN THE BACKGROUND) APRIL SAYS TO BOBBY WITH HER SOFT VOICE, “COME IN. BABY!” WITH HER POINTING FINGER INDICATING THE DIRECTION. THEN BOBBY REPLIES, “APRIL?” AND THEN FAINTS. THEN THE “DALLAS” THEME SONG BEGINS WITH THE CREDITS. THEN AFTERWARDS THERE IS A SUBTITLE MENTIONING “20 YEARS LATER.” KNOWING THAT THE NEW “DALLAS” IS PRESUMED TO HAVE CHRISTOPHER AND JOHN ROSS FEUDING THE SHOW SHOULD ALSO FEATURE A TEENAGE DAUGHTER OF BOBBY AND APRIL WHO WOULD BE IN THE ROLE OF LUCY.

THERE ARE REPORTS THAT THE MISS ELLIE TYPE ROLE IS BEING OFFERED TO ANNETTE O’TOOLE AS BOBBY’S NEW WIFE ANN EWING, AND I THINK THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

        1. SHEREE HAS SIMILAR FACIAL FEATURES, BLONDE HAIR, PERSONALITIES, AND A DEEP VOICE TO BARBARA BEL GEDDES UNLIKE ANNETTE O’TOOL. I NOTICED THAT AFTER SHEREE PLAYED A MORE SERIOUS TYPE ROLE AS ALEX CAHILL.

        2. APRIL WAS THE MOST SUPPORTIVE WOMAN BOBBY EVER HAD DELIGHTING HIM WITH HER SENSE OF HUMOR. SHE WAS JUST AS SUPPORTIVE AS MISS ELLIE WAS TO JOCK.

        3. AS MISS ELLIE DATED FAR BACK TO THE EWING-BARNES FEUD HISTORY APRIL DID TOO UNLIKE ANY NEW WIFE BOBBY CAN HAVE.

        4. BOBBY WOULDN’T BE MARRIED LONG ENOUGH TO A NEW WOMAN TO HAVE A DAUGHTER IN HER LATE TEENS IN A LUCY TYPE ROLE UNLIKE APRIL AND BOBBY.

        5. CLIFF BARNES SHOULD BE MARRIED TO MICHELLE, AND THE STORY SHOULD BE THAT MICHELLE ALWAYS WANTED TO TAKE REVENGE ON HER SISTER APRIL AND DESTROY HER OIL COMPANY. THAT’S WHY SHE AND BARNES GOT MARRIED NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO SO THAT THEY COULD WORK TOGETHER TO DESTROY BOTH APRIL AND THE EWINGS. MICHELLE AND BARNES SHOULD HAVE AN 18-19 YEAR-OLD SON IN A CLIFF BARNES TYPE ROLE AS THE NEXT GENERATION WHO CARRIES ON THE FEUD AGAINST CHRISTOPHER AND JOHN ROSS. MICHELLE SHOULD BE RUNNING A BARNES COMPANY CLOSELY WITH HER YOUNG SON TEACHING HIM WHAT TO DO, BUT CLIFF BARNES SHOULD BE CASTED IN A DIGGER TYPE ROLE AS BEING MORE MELLOW AND LAID BACK AGAINST THE EWINGS AS DIGGER WAS IN HIS FINAL YEAR. JUST LIKE MISS ELLIE LIKED CLIFF BARNES AND WANTED TO RESOLVE THE FEUD APRIL TRIES TO DO THE SAME THING WITH THE YOUNGER EWING BOYS AND CLIFF BARNES’ SON ESPECIALLY SINCE CLIFF BARNES’ SON HAPPENS TO BE APRIL’S NEWPHEW. CLIFF BARNES WHO HAD A PAST RELATIONSHIP WITH APRIL AS MISS ELLIE HAD WITH DIGGER COULD HANG OUT WITH APRIL FROM TIME TO TIME JUST AS MISS ELLIE DID HANG OUT WITH DIGGER IN THE ORIGINAL SERIES. DIGGER ONCE TOLD MISS ELLIE THAT HE WISHES HE HAD MARRIED HER, AND CLIFF BARNES COULD TELL APRIL THAT HE MARRIED THE WRONG SISTER. MISS ELLIE THEN TOLD DIGGER HOW HE BLEW HIS CHANCE, AND APRIL COULD TELL CLIFF BARNES THE SAME THING.

        6. CHRISTOPHER EWING SHOULD BE MARRIED TO CLIFF BARNES’ DAUGHTER FROM AFTON AT SOUTHFORK WHO WOULD BE IN A PAM TYPE ROLE WHO IS TORN BETWEEN THE EWINGS AND THE BARNES SIMILARLY AS PAM WAS. SHE ALSO WOULD BE A HALF-SISTER TO CLIFF AND MICHELLE’S SON AS PAM WAS TO CLIFF. THE ISSUE ABOUT PAM BEING UNABLE TO HAVE A CHILD WITH BOBBY COULD ALSO BE APPLIED TO CHRISTOPHER AND CLIFF BARNES’ DAUGHTER WHO WOULD INHERIT HER FATHER’S DISEASE. JOHN ROSS WOULD TRY TO DRIVE HER OUT AS J.R. TRIED TO DO WITH PAM.

        7. APRIL WAS ALWAYS FULL OF SURPRISING MOMENTS TO BOBBY FROM THE TIME SHE SUPRISED HIM IN VIENNA, TO THE TIME SHE MISSED SURPRISING HIM AT AN AIRPORT WHEN HE WAS LEAVING HER HOMETOWN TO RETURN TO DALLAS, AND TO THE TIME WHEN LATER SHE SURPRISED HIM AT HIS OFFICE THROWING SNOWFLAKES. BOBBY DISCOVERING APRIL ALIVE IN THE SHOWER AFTER WAKING UP FROM HIS DREAM WOULD REMIND FANS OF TYPICAL APRIL SURPRISES WITH THIS BEING THE BIGGEST APRIL SURPRISE OF ALL.

        7. PATRICK DUFFY AND SHEREE WERE THE ONLY TWO MAJOR CHARACTERS ON “DALLAS” WHO LATER HAVE HAD LONG-TIME SUCCESS ON TELEVISION, AND IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE THE TWO OF THEM TOGETHER AGAIN.

        8. SINCE SHEREE WAS AT THE 30 YEAR REUNION WITH THE ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS AND THEY ARE TRYING TO BRING AS MANY ORIGINAL CAST MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE IT IS A GOOD SIGN THAT SHEREE COULD BE STRONGLY CONSIDERED. SOON FANS WILL PURCHASE IT AS WELL AS THE FINAL SEASON FEATURING APRIL’S DEATH WHICH SOON WILL BE FRESH ON THE FANS’ MIND ENOUGH TO SEE BOBBY WAKING UP FROM HIS DREAM.

        9. THE LATE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF “DALLAS” LEONARD KATZMAN ONCE SAID THAT HIS BIGGEST REGRET WAS KILLING APRIL OFF, AND SHEREE ONCE SAID THAT UNFORTUNEATELY THEY CAN’T BRING BACK THE DEAD. WELL, THIS IDEA WOULD MEAN THAT APRIL STEVENS EWING HAS NEVER DIED IN THE FIRST PLACE. APRIL WAS CONSIDERED DEAD ONLY DURING ONE FULL SEASON AS MUCH AS BOBBY WAS. THAT SHOWER SCENE OF BOBBY WAS THE MOST EXCITING CLASSICAL MOMENT IN “DALLAS” HISTORY, AND IT WOULD BE FUN FOR “DALLAS” FANS TO SEE SUCH AN EXCITING MOMENT HAPPENING AGAIN WITH THIS TIME BOBBY WAKING UP FROM A DREAM INSTEAD OF BEING DREAMT OF. THE TITLE OF THIS PILOT EPISODE SHOULD BE CALLED “APRIL FOOLS DREAM.” HAVING APRIL AGAIN UNLIKE A NEW WIFE FOR BOBBY MORE LIKELY WOULD MEAN THINKING LONG-TERM AHEAD RATHER THAN THINKING BEHIND RESULTING IN SHORT-TERM. IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT A MINUTE TO EXPLAIN HOW APRIL WOULD BE ALIVE AS IT ONCE DID FOR BOBBY. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH REMAKING SCENES SINCE SHEREE ON “WALKER TEXAS RANGER” AS ALEX CAHILL REPLAYED MANY SCENES THAT WERE SIMILAR TO THE SCENES AS APRIL. ALSO ON “WALKER TEXAS RANGER” WALKER AND ALEX HAD MANY DREAM SCENES OF ONE ANOTHER. THEREFORE, AS TO THE WRITERS AND PRODUCERS THEY SHOULD AS APRIL WOULD SAY, “WAKE UP AND SMELL THE PERFUME!”

I WOULD LIKE TO ADD ANOTHER GOOD REASON WHY SHEREE SHOULD BE GIVEN THE STARRING ROLE OF APRIL ON THE NEW “DALLAS” TV SERIES. SINCE SHEREE IS VERY WELL-KNOWN FOR PLAYING THE PART OF BEING GUNNED DOWN I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A SEASON FINALE CLIFFHANGER CALLED “WHO SHOT APRIL?”

of course, smallville actors where never that good to begin with, the show totally sucks too now. where can they go, except back to soaps where they belong.

i cant believe that WB would take on something like this, its so stupid, nobody give a rat a*** about some dead soap.

That’s funny, what MTC said: that’s the same thought I had this morning: Christopher has to be earned a lot of his biological mother Kristin, so he will be the mean one and John Ross has earned a lot of his mother Sue Ellen. So that would be very surprising in changing the lines of bad ones and good ones…:)))

Exactly what i was getting at in my post a few days back.

The roles of John Ross and Christopher were the only weak parts of JR Returns IMO.

I think they should shake things up a bit. Make Christopher into the JR type, being bitter over Pam disappearing and having John Ross the good guy!

I would like to see Lindsay Wagner in the role of Bobby’s wife. I think that they should bring back the original Christopher and John Ross. I wish they would hurry up and select the cast can’t wait to see the new Dallas.

I just hope they don’t make John Ross and Christopher into clones of JR and Bobby – it will be too much of a cop out.

I think Annette O’Toole could be good as the female head of the family.

Not keen on the casting of American shows these days – most of the ‘actors’ (and i use the tetrm loosely) look too much like catalogue models – perfect jaw lines, perfect teeth but hardly ‘real people’. That was the beauty of Dallas first time around, the original cast were amazing and utterly beleiveable as they were the part, they didnt just look the part.

Of course, if Larry and Patrick arent cast (Duffy seems confirmed but not so Hagman) then it doesnt mean a whole hellova lot does it!

PS. Only just found out about larry Hagmans wife and the troubles he has had this past few years – my heart goes out to Larry.

Would be great to give the storyline a new treat by making Christopher Ewing realising he also like boys and that John Ross Ewing would try to annoy Christopher on this subject now and then…

Annette OToole is great for the role intended…. but Justin is not…. although he looks like he could be what ever the role calls for, for his credits and career, it is just a step back into soaps… and that is what DALLAS is …. it has so many story lines and sometimes you see a character all the time and sometimes you don’t…. it is not for him… but then I am only at the bottom of the totem pole in acting so what do I know??? Seriously, you never take a step back UNLESS it has beneficial perks and advances…. I think he will find something more appealing and exciting… I think he will wait it out… this repeat of a show is not all that great and boring …… ho hum….

I agree but is this not a lead role and more of a drama than a soap opera?

Dallas was huge in it’s day and this could bring Justin to a new global audience.

Maybe he can finally get to act.

Based on the smallvile thread I always thought Tom Welling would make a good bobby if they remade the series. So how about tom as christopher.

I would like to omar Katz back as john Ross

Lucy should be back to play the miss ellie esc role and be a strong powered woman. She could keep them all in line

it would be great to see Jenna charlie and lucas back

A new family clash, could have a barns connection or something totaly new and orginal. Or a morgan Britney connection!!

I think kethier sutherland could be a bady in the series with out any family connection.

bring in gary and val and the kids for one or two episodes

This is very interesting! I have always felt these shows were alike so it’s interesting WB is picking talent from it. Justin’s potential other role sounds very Cliff Barnes-ish which is interesting although I wish Cliff and company were actually on the new show instead. Otherwise it sounds fine and I’m certainly looking forward to the rest of the cast announcements.
