TNT announce new Dallas pilot episode. JR Ewing is back

TNT has announced today they have ordered a pilot episode of “Dallas” revamped by producer Cynthia Cidre, the producer of tv series “Cane.” The new soap would revolve around the kids of brothers JR and Bobby Ewing “who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance.”

So it’s really happening.

Is everyone looking forward to seeing what the opening credits will be like…? I really am hoping that they decide to ressurect the original style with the sliding sequence and the actors presented using the 3-way-split with the same font.. and bang up to date Dallas theme. If they choose to modify the final 2 seasons ala Lesley-Anne Down, Kimberly Foster, Sasha Mitchell etc opening style it will be a little disappointing.. The credits will be a big part of making an impact..!!!

      Did the series start?
Did I Miss it by a week?
I just moved around the corner from the real Dallas Ranch in Parker and did the tour and it was cool to see behind the scenes and loved watching it as a kid.

Great! I’ll watch if VP (Pam) will be in it too. I want a more realistic and happy ending for Pam and Bobby. Better yet, Pam should come back with a daughter (hers and bobby). More fights, jealousy and romance at the same time but in the end, family means more important than anything else.

I’VE GOT A GREAT IDEA. WITH PATRICK DUFFY CASTED AS BOBBY PRESUMED TO BE IN THE JOCK ROLE SHEREE J. WILSON AS APRIL WOULD MAKE A GREAT MISS ELLIE ROLE ON THE NEW TNT PILOT EPISODE OF “DALLAS.” IT SHOULD BEGIN BY REPLAYING APRIL’S GUN DOWN AND FUNERAL THEN BOBBY WAKES UP FROM HIS DREAM WHILE STILL ON THE HONEYMOON IN PARIS AND APRIL IS TAKING A SHOWER. THEN AS BOBBY APPROACHES THE SHOWER (WITH BOBBY AND APRIL’S FAMOUS SAXOPHONE SONG BEING PLAYED IN THE BACKGROUND) APRIL SAYS TO BOBBY WITH HER SOFT VOICE, “COME IN. BABY!” WITH HER POINTING FINGER INDICATING THE DIRECTION. THEN BOBBY REPLIES, “APRIL?” AND THEN FAINTS. THEN THE “DALLAS” THEME SONG BEGINS WITH THE CREDITS. THEN AFTERWARDS THERE IS A SUBTITLE MENTIONING “20 YEARS LATER.” KNOWING THAT THE NEW “DALLAS” IS PRESUMED TO HAVE CHRISTOPHER AND JOHN ROSS FEUDING THE SHOW SHOULD ALSO FEATURE A TEENAGE DAUGHTER OF BOBBY AND APRIL WHO WOULD BE IN THE ROLE OF LUCY.

I GREW UP WATCHING “DALLAS” AS MY FAVORITE SHOW WITH BOBBY EWING AS MY ROLE MODEL AND THAT THE BOBBY-APRIL COUPLE WAS MY FAVORITE TV COUPLE SINCE SHE WAS THE MOST SUPPORTIVE WOMEN BOBBY EVER HAD DELIGHTING HIM WITH HER SENSE OF HUMOR. IT WAS THE SADDEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN ON TELEVISION WHEN APRIL WAS GUNNED DOWN, AND THAT I STILL COULD NOT GET OVER APRIL’S DEATH. INSTEAD OF KILLING APRIL OFF IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THAT APRIL WAS KIDNAPPED AND MISSING ALL SEASON LONG WHILE BOBBY AFTER RETURNING HOME ALONE FROM HIS HONEYMOON SENDS MEN TO SEARCH FOR APRIL. THEN AT THE END OF THAT FINAL SEASON BOBBY GETS WORD THAT APRIL HAS BEEN RESCUED AND IS RETURNING HOME SAFELY.

MY only fear is that the reboot of DALLAS has so much to live up to that it will never stand the test of it’s fans (vis a vis Lord Of The Rings). Also, I hope the rebooters remember that it was the intricate and addictive *story* that made DALLAS great and not be tempted to succumb to the “sex sells” adage of most popular TV. I understand that there was sleaze in the original series, but would it *really* have made any difference to the story had J.R. and perhaps Kristen were shown bumping uglies? I was fine with the “suggestion” of sleaze rather than watching a ten minute softcore pornographic film in the middle of my episode! I think that the strength of DALLAS came from it’s wonderfully cast characters and fantastic storyline. (Ok, perhaps not all cast was spectacular, I mean ,to each their own, but Charlene Tilton could not an Emmy win:) )

Just an opinion, flame away :)

More ideas. Aside from focusing mostly on the new generation, JR retires from Ewing Oil as his sons, James and John Ross (and any other kids he might have) are fighting each other and their cousins on who will be top dog at the company. JR is pursuing Sue Ellen who he finally decided was all the woman he would ever need. She has created a fantastic life for herself and won’t have anything to do with him, but time will tell, and she does miss Southfork. One of JR’s sons marries the daughter of one of the Ewing’s worst enemies, giving a deja-vu to the original series pilot. Ray has bought back the portion of Southfork that he had sold, giving him and Jenna a reason to be back on the Ranch, they have a couple of children, being additional Ewing cousins, but Jenna still has a flame for Bobby, which causes conflicts. Bobby was always the hero, and the counter-balance to JR, but in a role reversal, Bobby has become the new JR in town, at least for a while, and then Pam comes back into his life…

Now that Barbara Bel Geddes has died, the pilot should focus on the estate of Southfork and who will inherit it. JR has John Ross and an older son James. They could introduce a couple of teenage children that he might have had with Callie or someone else in the years between the end of Dallas and now. Bobby has Christopher, and was Jenna’s daughter really his? He could have a couple more children from the years between, too. Of course, Gary has Lucy and the twins durng the Knots Landing years. So there are multiple cousins (Jock & Ellie’s grandchildren) who could fill a new show with new conflicts and drama. But who will inherit Southfork. Ray sold off his share that Jock left him. Gary was never a fixture in Dallas. Bobby loved the land. JR was really only interested in the Oil business. I think the pilot should start with this premise of the funeral, and settlement of the Southfork inheritance., and provide a nice tribute to Miss Ellie, Jock, and Clayton who are now all gone from that generation. Then they can move on with the lives of the family members and the current makeup of the family in the oil business. To succeed, it really needs to focus on the new generation, and pepper in some of the old-timers to keep the continuity going. Also, Pam should come back and resolve her abandonment of Bobby and Christopher and try to re-build a relationship with them.

I am hopeful about the new series because I loved Dallas, but as mentioned above, it will have to be done well. Referencing the originals with guest appearances, but focusing on the new characters. And hopefully they will do a better job of tying in Gary and Valene (Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark) from the original and Knots spin-off.

TNT should run the entire Dallas series (if legally possible) before the new series starts.

Linda Gray must return as Sue Ellen, no other actress can play her like Linda. There has to be a Sue Ellen if the story revolves around her and Bobby’s son. Wish Victoria Principal could return too as Pam.

I am sure they will include Sue Ellen as she was a major character in the last 2 Dallas installments in ’96 and ’98. It would be great to have Victoria come back and continue the Pam character. The show (IMO) handled the departure of Victoria/Pam very badly. I know they had “issues” over killing off any character so soon after having to justify the return of Patrick/Bobby a year earlier. Despite fan loyalty to VP, producers should simply have recast the character of Pam. They did for ONE episode in ’88, and I think fans would have accepted a new actress in the role. Anything would have been better than having “Pam” wrapped in bandages, then abandonning her beloved husband and son with the help of the Wentworth Industries Chairman. That was a crock! It betrayed 9 years of Pam being a loving, devoted mother and eternal lover of Bobby. Why? Because she wasn’t “pretty” anymore. NOT believable and could be finally resolved in ONE episode by VP and producers – if they wanted.

Glad to see that Priscilla Presley may reprise the Jenna Krebbs character. Having Jenna and Ray move to Europe was even dumber than the Pam fiasco.

It will need to be done well. The key actually is not to rely on the original cast but to have reference to them. This would make John Ross and Christopher key in ensuring many of the original elements remain but it focuses on the future. They would be men in their thirties so it would be believeable that they are running a powerful business.

    Lets hope it works.

I think it’s the greatest thing to happen to TV since Dallas. The reality show on TV stink as do most of the shows on television now these days. I think some good ole Texas BBQ and brothers fighting over an oil company will put some spark back into the tv industry. I don’t know who thought of this idea, but he/she is a genious. I have always wondered why someone didn’t come up with a new generation Dallas. You have John Ross, Christopher, Charley, Lucas, Margaret plus the older generation. Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!

Wooo-hooo! Reading this has truly made my day! To think that “Dallas” could well and truly be back on our television screens is incredible.

I hope all aspects of the pilot are done well though if we are to hope for a full series. Everything from the script to casting has to be faultless because TV companies have fairly bad habits these days of not giving TV shows a proper chance to run and cancel them just after one season if they don’t pull in the viewers they need.

Although it would be amazing to see Larry, Linda, Patrick, Victoria, Ken and company back on the show full-time, I think sadly the most we’ll see of them will be in cameo roles in which case the casting of the new generation of Ewings/Krebbs’/Barnes’, John Ross, Christopher, Lucas, Margaret, Pamela-Rebecca, will have to be very well done to make up for the lack of veteran “Dallas” actors.

Add this up with the fantastic storytelling we came to love on the original show and TNT are sure to have a hit on their hands which will definitely pull in past fans of the show and a new generation of viewers worldwide. How do I know this? I am only 17 years old myself and think “Dallas” is the greatest TV show of all time. So if I can be captivated by what the show had to offer from 78-91, then I’m positive people of my age will be drawn in by the new stories and characters from 2010 and beyond….

Oh and please, please, please keep the original theme tune of the show! I just can’t imagine watching the opening credits and not hearing that iconic theme.

Lots of love “Dallas” fans from Scotland :D !

I love the idea. Bring back Linda Gray and Hagman for the grandparents. Forget Susan Howard, Victoria Principal, Steve Kanaly, and other uninteresting characters. Even Patrick Duffy as Bobby was uninteresting, and not cast well in the original. Now, Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes was perfect casting… and we liked Clayton Farlow (Howard Keel) too.

… after Priscilla Presley’s facelift bomb, I don’t think we want her back. Sorry.

Patrick Duffy as Bobby, uninteresting? Are you smoking crack? The show almost went off the air the season that he was “dead” The only way it survived was because they brought him back. And Dallas was built upon the Pam and Bobby relationship. How can you say that they weren’t needed?
