Is Gurinder Chadha hoping for a Dallas come back?
In a recent interview with the London newspaper ‘Metro’ Gurinder hinted the movie may well be resurrected.
So will she finally shoot JR after all? ‘It’s Hollywood, you know?’ Chadha shrugs before popping a cake confidently into her mouth. ‘Projects get resurrected and I like to think good scripts never say die. ‘ More power to her elbow, say I – though if I were JR, I’d be quaking in my cowboy boots.
Dallas the movie was announced several years ago as a remake of the original five part pilot from 1978, a drama based on the Enron scandal with JR Ewing at the helm played by John Travolta. Recently it was rumored to be a comedy take on the Ewing family.
So what happened to the Dallas movie?
“The studio did some research and they found out that if you were under 38 you didn’t know the show Dallas,” laughs Chadha. “So of course they worried about a younger audience not coming to see it, because people didn’t know the show. And of course that made me feel really old because I do remember it.”
Gurinder’s latest movie Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging is in UK cinemas from Friday, Jul 25

Jeff is right. What happened to good TV.
We need tv shows like Dallas (the later years) to finally rid classic tv nights of this reality bull **** (it has gone to far.) It would put classic friday night tv back on the map, when family’s would sit down and watch a real tv show together. The 80’s were such classic times for tv and all the shows that used to be on. The younger people of today are clueless and have no idea what it was like and I’am 35 years old. Look at the ratings for this show it was huge and number 1 for a while, but most important it brought familys together and freinds, coworkers also injoyed talking about it. Today we get crap like john and kate plus eight, flavor of love, bride zillas. These shows truly suck and make these people millions for acting like asses on nation wide tv, and we wonder whats wrong with people today. Who cares that a average couople are raising 8 kids (their recent drama is all for ratings).
I was 4 when Dallas came out on tv and I have been buying the dvd collection of this show, and was hooked from the start. My family got me started (about how it was so much fun to watch)A true 80’s classic. Tv viewers of today are missing out with all the reality crap that dominates tv today.
Are there any real life Bobbies out there? let me know…lol :-p
Hey I’m 25 I will be 26 in January, and I love Dallas, I watch it with my mom who is in her 40s, and she remembers watching it as a teenager, and I’m hooked. I was excited to hear about a movie being made, and I talked to my friends about it, some of them do remember Dallas, and watching it with their mom or grandma. So don’t be so sure about the younger crowd not coming. If travolta, and other greats are in the the people they will come…lol Anyways can’t wait for season 12, hurry up, and bring them to the US already, and get the bulk package out, so we can but it too. Thanks. Oh, and advertise the movie, and people will come. Advertise earlier, and often. The only crowd that may not come is my younger siblings generation the under 21 crowd…lol but who really cares about them. Millions would love to see this movie, I just know it!
Watching “Dallas” was one of the few things my mother and I could do together without fighting. My daughter (now 20) likes the show. It’s too bad the primary characters don’t get together one more time and make another movie or even a new TV show… show us John Ross grown up and being an even bigger and more powerful snake than JR was, (chip off the old block, right?) with a whole new generation of Ewing men wooing beautiful women, wheelin’ & dealin’ etc. Hagman as JR would still be dynamite as the patriarch of the clan, just as Jock was way-back-when. It would only work if the four main original actors would reprise their characters. (Well, five with Lucy.) Can’t you just imagine Bobby seeing Pam sitting alone in a restaurant and approaching her, and the magic that could happen between them if FINALLY, after all these years, (AND after an appropriate amount of interference from JR and hysteria from Cliff of course…) they could get together and have their happily-ever-after. JR and John Ross working together would be a force to be reckoned with in the oil industry. John Ross would be old enough to have kids of his own… imagine JR as a Grandpa!!??!! Lucy could come back from Europe, have a couple more failed relationships and then finally find “Mr. Right” and have a big Southfork wedding. Then maybe a late-in-life baby.
I hope the bigwhigs who create TV shows think of this idea and run with it… the story lines would be almost limitless with two (or three) generations of Ewings back at Southfork. Bobby’s son Christopher, and Cliff’s kids (if the writers can figure out a way to add them to the story), could be feuding for generations to come. The original show’s elders wouldn’t even have to stay on the show very long… just enough episodes to establish the story lines and characters, then they could die off or retire to Florida, or get Alzheimer’s and have to go away… How about JR with terminal cancer? A JR with nothing left to lose would be a force of nature… I could even imagine JR making an occasional cameo appearance as a ghost haunting Sue Ellen!! Southfork Haunted! LOL I could write this stuff…
like my father used to say where there is a way there is a will….
I am 32 from United Arab Emirates and I love the show. We have our own Oil Barons Ball in Dubai
I think the movie should be made. I would also like to see dallas come back to soap net as they have decided to do back to back of all the other soaps and bury the best show this side of juarez.
Hey I’m only 20 years old and I know more about the show than people who started watching it when it first came out. I love Dallas and I’d love to see this movie
whoI am 53 yrs. old and loved the series, Dallas. I want a movie! John Travolta should be J.R. Junior with Daddy still at the helm but more so behind the scenes. How does that sound? I use to watch One Life to Live and the one to play Sue Ellen can be found there. Her name is KASSIE DEPAIVA. Her charatcter is “Blaire”. When it first came about that a movie was to be made I immediately thought of Kassie as Sue Ellen. Put her and Travolta together. HOT,HOT, HOT. Only one guy could play Bobby. Patrick Dempsey would simply make an awsome Bobby Ewing. I get the chills thinking about it.
Heck, give me the money and I will write the movie.
will im 25 years old and i love the show dallas i remember seting up with mom and dad at night witching it and rec it. now i have my wife loveing it and we both hope there will be a movie of it soon so pleses lets get it rolling
The movie should be made as a cliff hanger. There is a built in audience of the over 40 crowd and the studio who makes it can target a younger demographic with smart casting and sex appeal. With a built in audience as a perk they can recreate a proven winner. Hopefully without losing the elements that the original fans love. I think it’s a no brainer and could be box office gold with the right spin. If it’s done as a thriller/soap with a cliff hanger ending (setting up a sequel) and throw in enough steam then it can’t loose. It will require a younger cast. Think Dallas begins. If done right it could launch a series of movies. They could go with unknowns for most of the roles and cast a couple of somewhat bigger names for JR and Sue Ellen. Maybe spring some $ for Megan Fox to play Pam. I like Nick Nolte or Kris Kristoferson for Jock and Sissy Spacek or Jane Fonda for Miss Elle.
I watched Dallas as a teenager and I thoroughtly enjoyed it. A couple of years ago, they had a re-run in the UK but, after 4 series, it ended, something about how much it cost to show all the series.
I was gutted when this happened, so I’m hoping one day, they will re-run them again and make a new movie as I think people of all ages, young and older, would go see it.
I’m 16 years old and want the movie made.
Where do these stats come from. I’m 31 and watched the show and remember when J.R. got shot. I even remember parts of episodes when i was 4. I would stay with my grandparents on friday nights and that’s what they watched but that still counts! I think it only got better as it went on. I loved it when they brought in George Kennedy the last couple seasons to play McKay. Someone mentioned a 3rd movie. there was J.R. returns and war of the Ewings but that was it, right?
I hope they make a serious movie. I hoped Soap Net would make an original series in which the next generation bands together (as Grandpa Jock would have wanted) to run Ewing Energy. Ewing Oil took over one of the Seven Sisters, I believe they were called, and branched out into alternative fuels for more influence. Bobby dabbled in solar so what would be a better tribute than to resurrect it? Bring back Gary’s kids from CA, Callie’s son, and maybe even Cliff’s daughter.
I’m 43 and Dallas has been my favorite show since it began. Our High school even used the theme of Dallas during football season. This should not be a comedy! I agree with all the others to bring back as many actors as they can to do the movie and show a next generation of “Ewings” in today’s world!
Big fan of Dalaas, im 35 & remember the iconic soap 1st time round. I have just recieved series 10 on DVD this morning and can’t wait to watch it. PLEASE MAKE THE MOVIE! or better still bring back ‘DALLAS!’
I am from Sweden and remeber the TV-series well. Back then it was the climax of the week – luxurious, good stories and crushing lines! Now I am 33, and it would be really nice to see this as a movie!
well i’m 15 and i love dallas!
i think they should go ahead and make the movie!
Just make the movie already. Everyone will be surprised how well it will do, not only in the U.S., but world-wide.
the only person that can play ray crebs would be brad pitt. as he already said in an enterview he would be honored! brad pitt made his first screen appearence in dallas with ray and pricilla. travolta may be the seceret to getting this movie off the ground. although the recent tradgety in his life this could be some rewarding work to get his mind off sad things and get going again. charline, larry hagman, linda grey, and patric duffy all love get togethers and i think want to do the movie. and the idea about christaphor and jon ross grown up and running ewing oil is a great idea. the only people that could ever talk victoria principal into making a reapearence is the old cast and maybee john travolta with them. but then again i dont know what her problem is. the only place i have ever seen her lately is that stupid show in the middle of the night about all these make up products. i know she hasnt fallen that low. where is the older woman that played miss ellie for a season? she was good enough and did an ok job playing miss ellie and might could do it again? sandra bullock would make a good pam though. if victoria just is too resentfull or something . i am 53 and have seen every episode 5 times or more.
i think the movie shoudl entail not the beggining but the continuation from where it was left off, so what if you dont get the younger audience! there is still enough peopel that watched it long ago. Why not let the original characters reprise their roles.
I dont think making the Dallas movie with such actors as John Travolta or Angeina Jolie not doubting their abilities, but come on, who do we know JR Ewing,,,none other that Larry Hagman, no one can ever fit those boots, i think they should take that Novella it is perfect to base the movie on that, it is a great stroy line and base….”for mark R Bullock i believe they already did a movie made for tv the early years of the ewings, i read it some where in the forums…i may be wrong.
So make the movie in Dallas, and lets get Larry, Linda, Charlene back, Patrick, Victoria and the rest,
It would have more appeal.
If anyone who matters in the film making industry is reading this, I have psychic abilities and I can tell you for definite that making Dallas the movie is an absolute sure fire winner. Only don’t make it a comedy. Don’t let anything get in your way. Make this movie today. I promise you’ll be glad you did.
Hi Im from Manchester UK, 38yrs and I do remember Dallas from the 80s/90sm, and have been along time fan of Dallas.
It would be great to see a film made, but with good actors as near to the originals as possible, so we dont lose any realism from our memories of the show.
It would also be good to see a film made of how it all really begun with Jock & digger Barnes PPLLLEEAASSEE….
I’m From TURKEY! Here have many people who are the big fans of DALLAS!We want the MOVIE! Just make the movie as soon as possible!!!
My husband and I are in our mid thirties and we love Dallas. Just make the movie already!!!!
Guess what…I’m 23 and I live in Canada and I NEED the Dallas movie to come out…more than oxygen!
Instead of making a hole new saga for the Ewings why not just make a movie with the original cast?????
If they are talking about Jock Miss ellie etc, we all know that Jock Ewing (Jim Davis) was the best and only Jock. However why not take the novella and turn that into the movie, would it not be more interesting to see the original cast on the big screen as opposed to the actors like Tom Sellick, they are just as older.
Would it not be perfect to have JR Ewing (Larry Hagman) portrayed in his original role, Ewing merged with that other company star, have it just aobut to be handed to John Ross with the other ewing kids bidding for the seat.
Why reknew the Ewings with new faces, what would be the story line, after all they covered most of the sory lines in the series.
What woudl be the story for having miss Ellie and Jock woudl they remake the story plots with these new actors?
forget about the made for tv movie, lets bring the original cast to the screen.
MAKE THE MOVIE!Cast Tom Sellic as Jock, Sissy Spacic as Miss Ellie. Anjelina Jolie as Sue Ellen, Ashley Judd as Pam.I have no Idea who for Jr, Bobby , and Ray.Any Suggestions???
How could they be so thorough as to research and find that younger people wouldn’t watch Dallas, and still believe that a comedy version would fly? Who did their research for them?
I’m 50 yrs. old and have watched Dallas for what seems like forever… Watching JR, Bobby and the rest of the cast growing old. I couldn’t wait for the new movie to come out… and then BAM! They turn it into a stupid comedy. THAT was NOT the Dallas I loved and couldn’t wait to see each week! PLEASE, make the Dallas movie — but the way it should be made.. with wheeling and dealing, backstabbing and plenty of “glitter and glamour”! I was fortunate enuff to have visited the South Fork ranch many years ago. A GREAT memory!! Which makes me want to see a movie get done.. and yes! WITH TRAVOLTA!!! To the producer.. just read this list, hear what happened at the reunion. Money talks — and there is STILL PLENTY of people who will pay good money to see DALLAS!!! Even if just at the movies! PLEASE… MAKE THE MOVIE!
DALLAS is the show , and yes we want a movie about dallas , but not a stupid comedy ,and the tv show has been taken off the air in this part of the state that i live in , but mabey someone will bring back soon , i have all the season on dvd but it not the same as tv , so yes we love dallas
Make the movie with the original cast (give Larry Hagman a wig and he will look fine!) as they all enjoyed making the original series and would probably love to get together again for a movie considering the huge fan following Dallas still has. Perhaps write a story line involving the current economic crisis?! But please don’t make it a comedy!
I am 27 years old, when I started to see the Dallas series I was 18 years old.
I started by mistake, as I saw the second season on TV and it was the begining, Do you beleive that i couldn’t miss the coming episodes and seasons….
There is a special charm in dallas and even nowadays with the improvement of the cinema and TV effects and technology,I didn’t found other series like Dallas
Dallas has something special….
What a lame excuse, the TV-Show is too old to make a movie out of it. What about all the other TV-Series wich made it into the theatres later?
- Starsky & Hutch
- Shaft
- Miami Vice
etc..
come on!

Everybody knows the Ewings, it doesn’t depend on age. I’m 21, so I think, I’m young, and I’m waiting for the movie!
Hi everybody! I’m 25 and I want the Dallas movie so much like others! in iMDB says, The Dallas Movie production is finished and coming in 2009. but they didnt write the cast of movie. Who plays the role of J.R. Ewing??????
I’m 26 and I want Dallas movie! I want a serious Dallas’ movie not a comic-spoofy movie!
I am in my late 40’s and I watched and loved Dallas from day one. I was big on Knots, too, but Dallas with all of JR’s shenanigans and some of the best cliffhangers ever was the best. I still remember proudly wearing my “I Shot J.R.” t-shirt the summer of 1980. Friday nights just aren’t the same since Dallas went off the air. So come on folks-in-charge, give us some more seasons on dvd, AND another Dallas movie ASAP! What better way to celebrate 30 years of TV history.
I am 31 and I start watch 25yr.old and I watch dallas dvds so much that burn up the dish so keep on buy more of dallas dvds.and I watch dallas on the soap.net on tv now they have it on at 3am.and how they have not got dallas movie on big sceen what do they want to say to fan they need to work on the movie so we can see it.I will be a fan in til we past on.so put the movie on paperand get start on it.
Hello, I am 36 and I saw Dallas from 1980 until 1995, when the series finished the transmissión en México. I have records chapters in VHS FORMAT and I have been buying the different temporated in DVD. Please, in Mexico wanted the movie, there are many fans.
I’m 41 and I’ve watched Dallas from the begining. A few years ago I was thrill to watch it AGAIN from the start on Soapnet. Now I’m collecting the dvd’s. Dallas is timless and will be captivating audiences 20 years from now. Please make the movie as it was originally intended with John Travolta as JR. Im begging you, Please don’t make a mockery of it or the over 40 somethings will be the first to tune out.
I am 27 and I am a Dallas addict! I grew up in Arlington, TX, a suburb of Dallas/Ft. Worth. I never watched the show growing up but last year, while in Hong Kong, I bought the 1st and 2nd seasons on bootleg because I was curious about the show being from the Dallas area. I don’t really know what I was expecting but I am now hooked. I cannot wait for the next season to be released. I need my Dallas. If anyone has the last few seasons, I need them. I don’t want to wait for the DVDs

I am 38 years old. I turn 39 in one week. I grew up with the show and moved to Dallas. Make the movie!!!
I am 37 i watched all 13 seasons of the show and loved it. at one point they were going to make into a bewitched move. That would of been wrong. I think it can be updated and be a Enron, or WallStreet Firm like lehmans brothers or WorldCom. That was what they were going to do in the first place just update it a little to match current affairs.
Now with the new resession this would be the perfect time to start dallas over since it started during a resession.,
I understand that a BIG announcement is coming up…is this about the movie, a tv reuion movie, or a return of the series?
Please make the movie but no comedy.Im 20 years old and Ive seen every episode possibly twice. But find someone who will portray J.R. as Larry Hagman did.
Don’t make Dallas a comedy. that’s what was so cool about the series. It was a drama that was riveting with an underlying tone of cheesiness (funny). It is an all-time classic. DON’T RUIN IT!!!
